Construction Updates East End News The first six months in pictures By Campus Next • January 16, 2018July 27, 2022 Joe Angeles, director of photographic services, takes us on a pictorial journey through the first six months of the East End Transformation. All photos by Joe Angeles/WUSTL Photos June – An endless parade of dump trucks retrieve, then haul away, dirt from the site. You can see the beginnings of Mount McKelvey on the left. June – (Relative) calm before the storm. June – The hole gets a little deeper in front of Givens Hall. July – The base of one of three tower cranes constructed on the site. July – Removing 330,000 cubic yards of earth is a gritty job. July – Clearing the way for progress, one scoop at a time. August – Massive augers bore through the earth preparing the site for the new buildings. August – East end teams work in two shifts to maximize daylight hours. August – Not all of the work is performed on such a grand scale. Human touch is still required. September -Chancellor Wrighton tours the site, led by alumnus Ryan Moss, BSBA ’01, BSCE ’01, who is project director for McCarthy. September – With mass excavation complete, the process begins to bring the buildings out of the ground. September – Beauty in unexpected places: Trucks entering the east end garage in the morning light. October – Concrete forms on the west wall of the east end garage. The outer walls of the garage are 30 inches thick. October – A worker secures concrete forms on the exterior west wall of the future garage. October – The shape of things to come: Work progresses on the lower level of Jubel Hall. November – Concrete being poured on the main floor of Jubel Hall. This piece of equipment vibrates in order to eliminate air pockets in the concrete during a pour. November – The site of the future underground garage is colored with dots and dashes of safety orange in the form of netting, cones, cranes and vests. November – Construction progress on the east end garage. December – A worker ties rebar on a column of Jubel Hall. This column on the first floor will support the second floor of Jubel. December – Workers plumb the columns of Weil Hall lower level.
