Wrighton Way will welcome visitors to campus and provide a connection to the larger community.

On Dec. 7, nearly 1,200 members of the Washington University in St. Louis community came together at a gala event to celebrate the impact of Leading Together: The Campaign for Washington University.

The evening also was an opportunity to honor Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton and his wife, Risa Zwerling Wrighton, for their contributions to the university during his more than 23 years as chancellor. Wrighton will conclude his term May 31.

Among the evening’s surprise tributes to the Wrightons was the announcement by Craig Schnuck, chairman of the Board of Trustees, that the university is honoring them by creating the Wrighton Tribute Fund. The fund will support some of the university’s greatest priorities and name three special places on the Danforth Campus in their honor. One of those is a special addition to the east end transformation project: Wrighton Way. In addition, the Laboratory Sciences Building will be named for Chancellor Wrighton, and College Hall for Risa Zwerling Wrighton.

Wrighton Way will be located south of the Gary M. Sumers Welcome Center and will include a walkway and court. With a gift of $1,000 or more to the Wrighton Tribute Fund, WashU community members can have a name or names engraved on a granite paver in the walkway connecting Forsyth Boulevard to the Wrighton Way court.

“During Mark’s tenure, our campuses have witnessed tremendous progress through the addition and enhancement of facilities that support living, learning and research,” Schnuck said. “As such, it is highly appropriate that the Wrighton name have a physical presence at the university, joining the ranks of our most esteemed leaders and steadfast supporters.”

Gifts to the Wrighton Tribute Fund can be made at gifts.wustl.edu/Wrighton or by calling 866-645-6448.
